We measured plant invader biomass across a long-term experimental plant diversity gradient. Invader species biomass was inhibited in more diverse plots, largely because of the presence of strongly competitive C4 bunchgrasses, consistent with a sampling effect. Invader biomass was negatively correlated with resident root biomass, and positively correlated with soil nitrate concentrations, suggesting that competition for nitrogen limited invader success. Resident root biomass increased and soil nitrate concentrations decreased with the presence of C4 grasses and also across the diversity gradient, suggesting that diverse plots are more competitive because of the presence of C4 grasses. In addition to this evidence for a sampling effect, we also found evidence for a complementarity effect. Specifically, the percentage of plots that had lower invader biomass than did the best resident monoculture (i.e. that had invader underyielding ) increased across the species richness gradient. This pattern cannot be explained by a sampling effect and is a unique signature of complementarity effects. Our results demonstrate the importance of multiple mechanisms by which diversity can increase invasion resistance.

Sampling and Complementarity Effects of Plant Diversity on Resource Use Increases the Invasion Resistance of Communities

BACKGROUND Although plant diversity is postulated to resist invasion, studies have not provided consistent results, most of which were ascribed to the influences of other covariate environmental factors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS To explore the mechanisms by which plant diversity influences community invasibility, an experiment was conducted involving grassland sites varying in their spe...

Di ersity effects in reproducti e biology

In polyandrous species, such as most insects, the reproductive success of male parents is the outcome of competition via their gametes for resources that a female has invested in her ova and will provide to the developing offspring (Parker 1970). Resource partitioning among offspring and their genetic identity and diversity will also affect the reproductive success of female parents. These proc...

Resource pulses can alleviate the biodiversity-invasion relationship in soil microbial communities.

The roles of species richness, resource use, and resource availability are central to many hypotheses explaining the diversity-invasion phenomenon but are generally not investigated together. Here, we created a large diversity gradient of soil microbial communities by either assembling communities of pure bacterial strains or removing the diversity of a natural soil. Using data on the resource-...

Seagrass genotypic diversity increases disturbance response via complementarity and dominance

1. Genetic diversity, like species diversity, can enhance resistance or resilience to perturbation. However, we know little about how disturbance intensity affects this relationship or what mechanisms underlie the positive effects of genetic diversity. 2. We experimentally tested the independent and interactive effects of seagrass genotypic diversity (two levels) and disturbance (three levels) ...

Plant diversity effects on grassland productivity are robust to both nutrient enrichment and drought.

Global change drivers are rapidly altering resource availability and biodiversity. While there is consensus that greater biodiversity increases the functioning of ecosystems, the extent to which biodiversity buffers ecosystem productivity in response to changes in resource availability remains unclear. We use data from 16 grassland experiments across North America and Europe that manipulated pl...
